Radio Free Longview looks to be greatly improved this year due to the moral and financial backing of Student Government Association Radio Free Longview is a radio station of sorts that plays music in the cafeteria to keep students entertained. The club was recently approved for $500 from SGA and $500 from student activities, for a grand total of one thousand George Washingtons.
Student Activities is waiting for leadership and more student involvement before it is willing to spend money on the club. Students Activity Coordinator Carolyn Miner said “A faculty advisor is required for a club to be operational at Longview.”
That money will go towards the hardware and software the club needs to get things started. A computer, amp, wall mounted speakers, and a subscription service to access music from are the things that top the list of required materials. A music subscription program similar to, if not in fact, Rhapsody looks to be the way the club will play music. With Rhapsody, users have access to streaming music, so music does not have to be downloaded. The user can also make play lists, which would allow Radio Free Longview to be operational
for more hours a day.
Radio Free Longview is under the Senate’s discretion and certain things must be done. Student Body President Travis Pflanz said, “The club must remain active and growing, and one member must attend the Student Government meetings to get constant updates.”
Meeting attendance is important because SGA monitors certain things that have gotten the club into trouble
in the past. Miner said “Administrators felt that in the past, the volume and the content of the music was too inappropriate.”
Radio Free Longview is still in the revamping phase, so its air date is currently unknown. The club is making
progress though, and also looking for new members.
