Lakers are playoff bound

The Longview Lakers’ are intesnse as they are headed to the playoffs for their third consecutive season. The Laker’s current record of 28-25 and only have lost five games in April and May combined.

“Going into the season we knew we were going to have a strong offense, and we struggled for a little bit, but people adjusted. We have been strong ever since,” sophomore pitcher James Fitzgearlds said.

Longview Mansion’s legacy lives on

The nearly century-old Longview mansion was once the heart of the Longview Farm community in Lee’s Summit, Mo. Now, the mansion is a tribute to the past, but it also serves a contemporary use.

The 22,000-square-foot structure’s size is monumental.  It has 48 rooms, six fireplaces, 14 bedrooms and 10 baths.  The Longview Farm encompassed 50 other farm structures, making it the biggest construction project from 1913-1914, and employing 2,000 workers, according to the current owner of Longview Mansion, Jeanne Marshall. The mansion was built by philanthropist and lumber baron Robert A. Long. but ultimately it was his daughter, Loula Long Combs, who made the mansion home.

For 30 years Longview was one of the finest show horse stables in the country. “They had started breeding operations in 1914 and they had some of the best saddle horses and Hackneys in the country,” said Dr. Michael Raynor, a retired MCC English instructor who worked at the farm as a young man.
