Penn Valley hosted its tri-annual “Know Your Community Day,” an informational event held every semester to familiarize students with the various goings on at the school.

This is an opportunity “for students to know the clubs, organizations and support systems on campus,” said Nicole Inzauro, advisor of the Campus Activities Board. “This is a time when clubs and student services [advertise].”

Representatives from over a dozen organizations staffed information desks and handed out information packets to students during the lunch hour.

Novel Challenge, which has had only one member for much of the spring semester, saw only one other student sign up for more information. Thirty minutes later, three other students had signed up. Novel Challenge reviews books from the national list of banned books. This semester, the group is reading The Perks of Being a Wallflower, by Stephen Chbosky.

IMPACT (Campus Crusade for Christ) and The Divinely Anointed Choir appeared, with calls for singers to join the choir. Penn Valley IMPACT meets with students at the University of Missouri – Kansas City every Thursday.

A lively bunch gathered at the tables of the Sisterhood of African-American Students (SAAS) and the Student African-American Brotherhood (SAAB) , who attend the event to increase membership.

“[We want] to abolish the divide between women of color,” said SAAS student leader Dominique Hernandez.

According to student president Cameron Creal, students of the SAAB hoped to effect “change in the atmosphere on campus.”

SAAS and the SAAB will collaborate on a fashion show for spring.
