Phi Theta Kappa, the international honor society for two-year colleges, boasts more than two hundred members at MCC-Longview.
The officers include President Nicole Maxwell, Vice President of Public Relations Chris Vedder, Vice President of Correspondence Jennifer Wiesemann, Vice President of Service Isaac Neal, Vice President at Large Samantha McReynolds, Vice President of Leadership Erin York, and Vice President of Fundraising Hijah Kamara.
Members must have a grade point average of 3.5 or higher, 12 credit hours, and pay a one-time initial dues.
“Phi Theta Kappa is a good way to get scholarships,” said Vice President of Public Relations Chris Vedder. Many officers have gone on to get full-ride scholarships, and many members get thoursands of dollars to go to four year institutions, Vedder said.
Not only is Phi That Kappa a great way to get money for school, but its also a great way to get involved in the community. A fundraiser for the American Cancer Society for relay for life raised over $1,000, $600 of it coming from jars placed next to cash registers in the cafeteria and bookstore.
On October 21, a Halloween-themed blood drive, is planned with a goal of collecting more than 100 units of blood, to beat last year’s goal.
Members have the option of choosing to be as active at they want.
“Choose what you have to do, be as active as you want. You have to have a 3.0 grade point average to stay in, but you don’t have to come to anything if you don’t want to, of course we want you to, but its your choice,” said Wiesemann.
Officers hope to get 20 new members by the induction date, which is October 18, with new member information meetings on October 13 and 14.
“I will dye my hair blue and make it a Mohawk if we get 20 members by induction,” Maxwell said.
Those who are interested in joining can fill out an application at the Phi Theta Kappa office on the first floor of the Campus Center.

“It’s too bad that we were only 4 people shy for the Blue Mohawk. There’s always next year! =),” Maxwell wrote us on Facebook.
